i put my queen on d3 with mate (in2, with say knight getting in the way) coming from re1. This is mate in 4, same amount...breakerofwind?

sccadams is right, zendenball, as the king escapes to f5. It's usually best to play forcing moves, in this case with Re1+. The king is forced to move and you are bringing your other rook into play, with the added benefit of taking his queen if you can't find mate.

It's still a forced mate, it just takes longer. Here's how I pictured it playing out:

1. ... Ke5
2. Qd3 Nf5
3. Re1+ Kf6
4. Rxe6+ Rxe6
5. Qxf5+ Kg7
6. Rg3+ Rg6
7. Rxg6+ Kh7
8. Qh5#

The alt solution for move two plays it out a different way. White mates on move 8 in both.
