how can the loss of a queen and a knight , to the take a rook seem incorrect to me

You don't take the rook. You checkmate. All four rooks are still on the board at the end of the puzzle. I think you were looking at the alternative solution for move 4, which, although the second best move under the circumstances, is inferior to checkmate by a large margin.

Anything is inferior to checkmate, even if you lose a queen, two rooks and so on, as long as you checkmate, you win.
