This is a nice combination. But what happens, if White plays 2. Re1 first?

1. Rxe7 Qd1+
2. Re1 Qxe1
3. Bf1 Nh3
4. Kg2

and now White cannot play the nice Qg4

Except that white is under no obligation to take the rook.

2...Qg4+ followed by 3...Qg2#
