Why can't the knight move to d4? same results?
I can't see why the Knight can't make the move to d4 as the result is still mate if the Rook takes the pawn at b4 and mate at Rook to f5

The alternative solution
Gives the answer to your question. But the main idea is that moving the knight to e3 so mate can also continue:

1. Kf6 Ne3
2. Rf2 Ng4#
