question....
Wouldn't it be better to go Knight f3 to f5 and then go Rook a1 to a8? It's less moves and a checkmate. I am not seeing any move to counter K f3-f5 that matter, but maybe I am missing something?

The Knight can't go to f5. If you mean e5, then the Knight gets taken.
2. Nxe5 Rxf1+
3. Kxf1 Qf6+
4. Kg1 Qxe5
Or, simply 2. Nxe5 Kb8
