This problem is absolutely stupid.

If the pawn advances, the king should kill it... yet he moves by the side. And even if he reaches the last square for a new queen. why wouldn't the king kill the queen again.

Black is hopelessly down on material and can't try to win here anymore. Black would be very happy to get away with a draw here. A draw by stalemate, which is what he would get, if white were to capture the pawn or go 2.Kf1.

Before you call a problem stupid, consider that it has been analyzed by a computer rated >2500 and by several hundred (perhaps thousand) players who got the problem correct. Rather than post such an abusive comment please post a legitimate question and someone will gladly explain.

It's just mathemetical that White gets more points by taking the queen than taking the pawn.
I've noticed a few of these exercises I could get the mate with an extra move or doing it a different way, but it says my move is wrong.

The point of the challenge in Chess Tactics is to gain the maximum advantage as efficiently as possible. Taking an extra move is therefore less efficient and therefore considered as less valuable (and therefore wrong).

As mentioned by perdurabo, black has gained a draw out of this "hopeless" position in which most players would have resigned. With the promotion of the pawn to a Queen, white has been forced to give up chances of victory and only get a 1/2 point for a draw since black is now favourite to win.

Why is 2. Kxf2 the wrong move, but 3. Kxf1 right?

After black's first move, white still has an advantage in material, and can still win if white does something stupid (any move but f1=Q+). After black's second move, white's material advantage has disappeared if he doesn't take the queen. Just as the computer is programmed to avoid a loss as long as possible, it is likely programmed to avoid a draw so long as possible when it has the advantage.

This is an excellent swindle.
