Why not the rook
Sorry but the chess engine doesn't work here, and I don't see why this solution is the better. If I put the e8-rook on e2, how the white can leave ton stop the mat?

white will go Qd5. (or d8+ then d5). the rook swap doesnt work, because one rook is left exposed at the end and you at most gain a pawn.
