I had to play this one to figure it out.
Basically if white plays Bb4 instead of Bd4, then white isn't covering the e5 pawn. Black would play the same move by taking the f4 pawn (thus making it so the e5 pawn isn't backed up by a bishop or the f4 pawn)... and then white would try to mate by moving the rook down, only to be thwarted when black just takes the free pawn. Here's the progression:

If
2. Bb4 Bxf4
3. Rd6+ Kxe5
