Wouldn't 3. ... Qxe2 be better? It makes it harder to see the mate and gives black som material before the game ends.

Not really since the game ends on the next move with Rf7#

Yes I know, but it still ends on Rxe4 anyway. So ends on the same move but after Qxe2 black gets some material instead. Plus I think the mate Rf2# is harder to spot then Rxe4.
