the solution makes no sense

The first move is a terrible one as is white's response move unless I'm missing something after the 1st move bishop 3d could take my knight and remove the threat to the Queen while going 2 points ahead

I think the main targets are Bb2 and Ra1, not White's Queen.

The reason the tactic works

Is that the threat to white's queen must be removed, leaving black with time to regain the sacrificed piece with interest, using the bishop's discovered attack on b2 and a1, as breaker has indicated.
