Why not Bxd4 first... why exchange queens????

I think it is because if you use the bishop you gain back some material but you still end up behind on material. Exchanging queens results in good position and a small material advantage.

Good point, mike. Plus, don't forget that the queen is hanging and will have to move and protect the bishop at the same time. This can lose the bishop and leave a horrible position for Black.
