Why wouldn't 2 ... Nde3 work just as well? I tried that, and it was wrong.

I thought so too. Also, continuation seems wrong, surely the continuation would have been 4. Qxa7+ instead of 4. Qc7+ which is much better for white?

2 ... Nde3 would be followed with 3. Qe5+, and from there it gets a bit messy.

Scratch my previous comment. I meant 3. *Be5+ (I forgot about the knight on g4)
