isn't 3. ... ta7 or ta8 another way to end it?

Not quite, 3. ... Ra7 or 3. ... Ra8 are followed by 4. Ba6, which delays the mate for a turn longer.

Why bother with 3

It was much easier in 2 ! another one with an over high rating , 1670 more like 1350
