another solution
f4-g3 as a second move, would lead to checkmate. That's what I was trying to play instead of capturing the rook.

I also played 2...g3 but on further analysis it doesn't work. White plays 3.Rxf8, Kxf8, 4.Rxe3, Qh2+, 5.Kf1, Rf2+, 6.Ke1, Qg1+, 7.Kd2 and then either Qf2+ or Rf2+ white can interpose the rook and black has no more attack!
