knight takes the knight at e2, check, and takes queen. Not sure why that isn't the solution.

After 1. Kc3 Nxe2+ 2. Kd3 Nxg1 3. Rdxg1 White is threatening mate or capturing
the b8 rook. The game will do on much longer than the 8 move mate that the
solution has.

water, I think you forgot about the knight on f6, which would capture the rook on g8. It's necessary to have both rooks on the g file.
