![]() if Qd8 there are a few bad variations. None are really better that I see. 1) ... Qd8 Nc6 Qd7 (Qc8 gives white mate) Qxb8 With this, Black lost a rook and gained nothing. There is still no way for white to regain any material in this position. In the Qxc5 alternative (the puzzle solution), black gets a pawn for the rook and still holds great central control even being down a rook and having terrible king protection. |
