not necessarily. For instance, if White makes the mistake of escaping check by Kf5, the black rook can move to the back rank with Rf8, and after that the position is a draw, since white no longer has any chance of the back-rank mate. This exercise is all about identifying that possibility and avoiding it.

Fair point! The given solution 1. Kf3 does result in the quickest mate, but it seems that just about any white move results in a win.

There are several positions where just about any move forces mate but the only move that is accepted is the one that leads to mate in the shortest number of moves.
