why would follow with #3 Rxd3?? Why not first Bxa8? Then Q-f2 to cover the pawn at c2??

Answer

Indeed hard to see, the reason is after 3. Bxa8, follows 3 .. Bxc2+ 4. Kxc2 Qxa2+ and white will be mated.
