bulldogg6404 14-May-12, 01:15 » Report abuse	Easier than it looks. In my opinion, the first move was the only trick, and I already knew it had to be a rook move for the purpose of allowing the bishop to threaten checkmate on d7.

fezzik 14-May-12, 10:09 » Report abuse	I knew the basic theme, but ... I couldn't figure out what to do after 1....Qg4. I was stuck on the idea of Rxg4 and taking all the pawns. It took me quite a while to change my perspective and view the pawns as numbers on a combination lock. Once I figured out they were cams on a lock, I found 3.Rc1 and they all fell into place! Very nice, and a neat twist on a fairly common theme.

thasmurf 14-May-12, 18:43 » Report abuse	This was fairly easy. I'm new here, but is this supposed to be difficult because the first move guarantees mate in 10? Since there are faster forced mates that can be achieved in 2 and 4 moves (guaranteed mates, but not a guaranteed number of moves)... hope that makes sense.
phonybenoni 14-May-12, 19:37 » Report abuse	Are you saying that White can force mate in less than ten moves from the initial position? Nobody seems to have found such mates in the last seventy years. If that were true, the puzzle should not be published as a mate-in-10; the solution should always be the shortest possible forced mate, in the fewest number of moves.
fezzik 14-May-12, 20:05 » Report abuse	For new players... All puzzles presume the best moves by both sides. This is a mate in ten puzzle because with absolute best play by both sides, White can force a mate in 10 moves. If black played less accurately, white could deliver a mate in two.
