1 Qb2If 1 ... Kxe5 2 f4# (note that both Rooks are pinned in this situation) amr14 A search in the "Yet Another Chess Puzzle Data Base" reveals puzzle #31033. Baird, Edith Elina Helen, Nottinghamshire Guardian, 1889 (I assume it is a crafted puzzle and not from actual play) go to www.yacpdb.org and paste "2N2K1B/5p2/2PNpr2/1QpkP3/3r4/5P2/3P4/5R1B" (but without the quotation marks) into the the field below the board, then select "Search" |

@dryvelLet me suggest that if you think a puzzle is not a mate in 2 (or a mate in whatever), close the box that congratulates you on solving the puzzle and click on the first move you made. You'll see the list of all possible plays for your opponent, when you select one it will show the response for mate (or forcing the mate). This will save you time and from posting potential embarashing comments. If you still see a new way to mate try posting it as an alternate solution under the options once you have solved closed the congrats box. The chess engine will run through all the pssibilities for you. Its a great tool. Cheers. |

My bad@jmc500: Thanks for the tip on using analysis. I'm not embarrassed as any dialogue on the game I see as a learning opportunity, and we are all learners as far as a I can see. @onedimensional: It should have been obvious from my original comments that I solved the puzzle. I never claimed superior intelligence however but though this the appropriate forum to voice my concern and am therefore grateful for the guidance. Your comments smack of a certain arrogance though that I may have to address at a future date. |

Mate in 3 is possible (and a more elegant solution presented) if:
Pf4+ Re4
Be4+ Kd4
Qd3 Mate
All plays by white are compulsory
