this puzzle makes no sense

my knights could have been easily killed preventing the check or the checkmate in the first place.

usually these mate in 3 puzzles are not so hard, but this was a tough cookie! It took me a while to 'see' the mate after Ng5+ Kg8 Ne7+ Kh8 and now Nf7, to me a strange mating pattern...
