Indeed it is, it was more fun trying to figure out why the position was illegal than it was solving the puzzle.

Illegal or improbable?
What makes it an illegal position? Is due to what appears to be 3 capture moves by black's pawns and yet only two white pieces are removed?

Raymond Smullyan wrote a couple of books years ago that dealt with this kind of problem. He Showed a position and you had to do a backward analysis to figure out how such a position could come about. Very logical and very tricky.

@irvinlee85 I suppose the knight could have moved out then after the rook was out the knight moved back

@bwc300 I dont think this paticular puzzle is being criticized, more like people are just discussing the position. Though I do agree that alot of these puzzles are criticized when they dont need to be.
