While it is not the hardest puzzle ...
since the winning idea is very apparent, it is a lot harder to visualize the entire sequence mentally, in otb style analysis. And I would have given it an Excellent score for beauty, if it had been presented in TACTICS lessons, rather than in PUZZLEs. It is too bad GK does not rate here with Beauty stars, as well as for difficulty.

Nice job, phantomfive !

Not a game
This is a chess puzzle; not a game. It is very creative. How often do you see mate-in-twelve?

Anyway, strange positions can arise from strange games. An acquaintance of mine decided, since is opponent would not resign, he was going to checkmate him using a king and a pawn although he had many pieces on the board. It was all in fun. he cornered the king using many pieces and had to make waiting moves so that he could mate the king using a pawn protected by the king. The ending position seemed improbable. These kind of things sometimes happen in casual games.

Problem
I think chess problems are useful when they provide positions that realistically can be reached in otb play. There is absolutely no way this position could ever be reached and so the usefulness of the problem is diminished.

Yes, I agree that realistic problems are better, but the whole point of these puzzles with impossible positions is to demonstrate some nice chess themes (In this case the double check) but they also make use of the geometry of the board to create some really amazing chess problems that are for the beauty and fun, not to help you improve your skills and tactics.

annasergeevna... actually
This position Can be reached, from the normal start position, with "normal" play. Not good play perhaps, but normal in the sense that nothing unnatural need happen to get there, such as either side taking an extra move, etc. (But if you do want really lifelike Mates + reasonable play, the puzzles from my profile page are primarily from my games, other GK players, or derived from theirs. And so should be more "real" to Recognize in a game situation, than many "Problems" which usually require "no unimportant extra material" etc. And which is why we call these puzzles I think. No Problem guidelines, except to fit the GK Input page. ) baronderkilt

But in this one; if I have not missed one, there is no piece that Cannot be where it is. (EG as if there were a WT pawn on g2, then Bh1 position would be impossible.) And so attainability becomes primarily an excercise of establishing that each pawn could be where it is, using no more captures than the number of pieces and pawns lost by the other side.

I find 2 means of reaching the BL Queen side pawn situation, both needing only 4 captures. And at least 3 means of reaching the Kingside BL pawn formation, the 2 I reviewed both needing 3 captures maximum. Total 7 captures to attain BL pawn formation.

(BTW If anyone REALLY wants a gamescore made to reach this position, but not take the time, I'm willing to make one @ $50.00 an hour, charging no more than one hour, but no less than 1/2 hour.   )

I certainly respect your opinion if you prefer more likely game positions, or clean Problem positions etc. But myself, I do find this puzzle very instructive to demonstrate this principle shown. Personally, I've never seen it before, repetetive like a windmill, yet running the King down a corridor of dbl checks like this. Perhaps I'd call it a Gauntlet or Ladder, Corridor or something. "Tunnel of Light" that is seen right before dying !? lol . Does anyone_know if the theme HAS a NAME from Problem Composition nomenclature? It seems a very plausible tactical motif, simply carried to its most extreme. To me, that makes a Great example. Very memorable.
