The origins
This was not invented by jboyette36. It is a famous mate known as Philidor's Legacy.

Hoyle's book "Treatise On Chess" (1808) first calls it "Philidor's Legacy", not because Philidor (1726-95) invented it, but because Philidor analysed it deeply. It was actually known since the time of the famous forefather of chess, Lucena, around 1497.

aidanbh, I don't think jboyette36 says he invented it. He's just showing a position where either black or white can force mate depending on who gets the next move.

Yes, Rich, you are probably right. But the Gameknot program had as a heading "created by", so I just wished to clarify the point.

We've seen this mating pattern too many times.

Smothered mate.
This is a very common pattern, common enough for me to have exploited it in an over the board game that I played. It was not the least bit challenging.

Philidor's Legacy-way too easy
It only took 2 seconds to solve.
