ChessikinsMost newcomers are probably looking for a bit of help in learning how to play chess, especially the endgame, rather than to solve a puzzle and these easier puzzles do just that. You could always try the harder puzzles which, imho, are usually actually puzzles made for puzzling rather than situations from a real game. |

chessikinsI don't really know what's your idea about what a traditional puzzle should be but let me tell you something about this position. White has three possible moves to create new threats: - Qb4+: Already mention and useless. - f5: Not possible because of the pinning pawn. - Qg2: Not possible because White's queen is protecting the pinning pawn. So what can they do to improve (and in this case checkmate), check with a rook sacrifice and force the king to move to a undesirable square (decoy) that help they to check again and force the mate. As you can see there are several tactical concepts in this position that you have to deal with, and I think that helps to improve your level which is the real aim of solving chess puzzles. Of course, this is in my opinion. |

Puzzles vs GamesIf it's been created then the aesthetics of puzzle-making is important. Every piece and pawn must have a purpose, even if only to create false possibilities. The rule that the first move should not be a check is not a rule at all, but a nice convention. Just like all poets, the good puzzle maker knows when to break with conventions. But this is a game. GM Nigel Short found the most efficient way to finish the game, using Damiano's method of sacking a rook to allow the Q to mate. Two Stars, both for difficulty and beauty. |

black responds by moving either R or Q to block the check anwhere along that line eg Qc5
Bh7
Is there any move black can make now to prevent CM? eg Qxb4
Rg8#
(sorry if the notation is off - beginner!)
