Not really chessikins
To be fair, it was added in 2008. The problem is that there are dozens of versions of this very famous mate in the puzzles section and the bot that selectsd puzzle of the day can't distinguish between them.

Although this is a very simple puzzle for an experienced chess player, the smothered mate has its unique beauty, and that is one of the things that make chess such a nice sport: beauty in simplicity.
And chessikins, maybe you do not realize that practically all puzzles are somehow based on some previous idea. Maybe you can come up with something truly "original" that qualifies as an easy puzzle?

.25 star...
.25 star difficulty
.10 star creativity.

The very first time someone sees this, it's beautiful. Perhaps even after a couple dozen times, it retains some of its beauty.

But after seeing it every week here?

@fezzik: Have you thought about people that are new to GameKnot, or even new to chess? And i think that "every week" is an exaggeration

Why do all you "wonderfully brilliant" players waste your time on the easy puzzles? We know you are clever - you tell us every time you make a comment. Confine yourselves to the more difficult ones.

Being a mediocre player myself, i can understand why "wonderfully brilliant" players like to "waste" their time on easy puzzles. First of all, they have plenty of time, so why not waste it? And secondly, chess is such a boring game, that it does not really matter on which puzzle you waste your time. So after wasting it on a difficult one, they waste it on an easy one. At least it keeps you busy. They have probably already lost all their friends while becoming such "wonderfully brilliant" chess players, so they have nothing else to do anyhow.

I think that this mate pattern has been overused, even in an easy puzzles section. Well, it's only an opinion.

Poor andy94, he added this over 4 years ago, he no longer plays on gameknot and he is still getting hell for it. I like the smothered mate because I've seen it in a couple old movies and it's nice to do something right after being beat up on the board for the last couple of days.

You're not mediocre yadasampati, you're nearly wonderfully brilliant. Just another 100 points or so.

Yeah this puzzle has been overused, didn't stop me wasting 30 seconds solving it and anoter 3 minutes reading the comments and posting nonsense myself.

14% of people so far have failed to solve this, so obviously it's not as easy as we all like to think.

1819 is a bit better than mediocre, but there are still much more better players... NOT MANY perhaps, but MUCH MUCH better players.

in my opinion, its more fun to see very complex 2-4 move puzzles having an elegant solution rather than having a puzzle having beauty in simplicity. just my opinion though cuz those "simple" puzzles are a bit too obvious for me

a puzzle I really enjoyed a lot for example is this1: puzzle #8627

it doesnt matter that the position is very unrealistic the only thing which (to me) matters is that the position CAN be reached in game and it is pretty complex to find counters to each move of the queen

@bb_cb_love_pizza Thanks for confirming my mediocrity

Concerning the puzzle, yes it is a very simple one, if you are an experienced chess player, but this is presented as an easy puzzle, and is interesting for newcomers. They should not be discouraged.

And although i am not a newcomer, i just like to solve all the puzzles, and i always try to say something nice about them, no matter how simple they are.

reminder
Yes, many people know this smothered mate idea, but how many times have you managed to pull it off in a game? For me, so far, never, though I came close once a couple of weeks ago

So, part of the value of this theme cropping up at regular intervals is to remind me to watch out for an opportunity to use it, or to exploit the threat of it, within the games I play.

Thanks for the puzzle andy94
