Since our good friend kingdawar is in bed I take upon myself to declare this position illegal. What was black's last move?

It doesn't have to be a legal position. It still sharpens your chess skills.

Of course it's not legal anyways, look at black's bishops and knights.

I don't get the problem with puzzles that can't be reached legally.

Exactly that is the problem

From Wikipedia: "The problem position must be legal. That is to say, the diagram must be reachable by legal moves beginning with the initial game array."

That's Wikipedia, a personal oppinion. I feel that chess puzzles are for the sole purpose of training a player in chess. I have done a lot of illegal and legal puzzles, and I learn just as much from either.

It's the "risk" of leaving the content of this section solely to user input with no further moderation

Risk? I don't see much of a risk. Most people can tell it's not a legal position.

From Gameknot: "Some chess puzzles are created ...with positions that cannot be reached in a real game of chess."
Since puzzles don't really have much application outside of themselves, it doesn't matter whether the position is legal or not. Many 'legal' puzzles are no less absurd in appearence than 'illegal' one's.

It's GameKnot's way of saying "we don't really care either"
