The reason Nxd4 works and not Nc3 is shown in the variation 1. Nxd4 Rxc5 2. Nb5, often followed by 3. Qh8#.

I agree with kysouth; is'nt 1. nc7 Bc7 2. Kb5+ Ba5 3. Ra5# a simple straightforward mate in 3.

Besides were is the mate after 1. Nd4 Rc5 2. Nb5 Be5 3. ?

Please check out the "All moves graph" located under "Options" in the puzzle window, and if you believe you found a different solution than given, use Options → Another solution in the bottom right corner of the puzzle window to enter it. (and while working through the solutions it will show graphically why the idea does not lead to mate in three)

Yes, Nc7 is very obvious and ruins the puzzle completely. Well, the mate motif is way too transparent, so there is not much to ruin. And there are hell lot of useless pieces on the board

The importance of the bishop on h1: 1. Nxd4 Rxc5 2. Nb5 Rxc6 3. Bxc6#
The importance of the rook on g1: 1. Nxd4 Rxc5 2. Nb5 Be5 3. Rg8#
The importance of the bishop on f2: 1. Nxd4 Rxc5 2. Nb5 Re5 3. Nxc7#
The importance of the rook on a2: 1. Nxd4 Rxd7 2. Kb5+ Kb8 3. Ra8#
