Well...
It's less beautiful without the queen sac.

Saving the queen means no mate in 2
A puzzle (and chess in general) is not about keeping or loosing pieces, but about checkmating the opponent. In this case there is no other way to give mate in 2, but by playing Qb8+. And indeed, the higher the piece that is sacrificed, the more beautiful it is.

Mate in 1
Knight to C7 is the only move that needs to be played.

Are you?
Are you looking at the right boards grog75? ...Nc7 then king goes to b8 since the knight blocks the queen check, where is the mate in 1 in that?

There's something intrinsically beautiful about a one horse mate..
who said anything too good can't be true?

"there is"
"your right"

I'm starting to think language and chess are closely related.

My first thought...
Was why is there only an 82% solve rate for one of the most hackneyed 2-movers in chess?

My second thought was why did 6 people feel the need to make a comment.

My third thought was to agree with tugger's last comment.

My first thought was ...
..how only 57% solved it excellently, ie without hints and up to 5 wrong moves allowed.

My second was realising that gameknot has a multitude of players rated under 1000 and that this site and puzzle section is for them as well.

Very simple. Actually this is one of the classic examples of a smothered checkmate in the chess world.
