The elegance of a stalemate trap...
once revealed makes the puzzle a great deal easier...

Challenging puzzle
with seconds left in a blitz game, and no increments, I prefer Black!

Most difficult!
One of the most difficult puzzles ever for me! How did this get in the easy category?

What do you mean by visualization only? Not using the 'analyze the board' option?

It is clear that we cannot move the knight because that means stalemate. The black king can only move to h7 or g8. It is not too difficult to see that rook moves won't help us either, nor playing the king (with or without check).

So i imagined what happens if we just play the Q to g1. For both blacks options, Kh7 and Kg8, we have a discovered check by playing the knight, at the same time forcing the king back to h8. So we just have to take care that the first queen move blocks that field, and the only move for that is Qa1

This is one of the most interesting puzzles that I have seen on Gameknot!

Yes indeed. I am not very good at it when more than 3 moves are involved, but because this is a 2-move problem with a relatively simple setup, i could visualize the resulting positions in my mind with not too much effort. It is a good training for real life game situations, where you have no analyze tool

i liked it but it took me really forever to figure it out

Actually, it would have been more logical for me to try out Qb1 (instead of Qg1) as a first move, because that forces the black king to g8, but the conclusion would just be the same.

And even more logical than Qb1 (as a first try) would have been Qe4 or Qd5

I knew that the knight would make a discovered check with the rook, but the queen move took me a little while to find out. After 10 seconds staring, I figured out the queen move. Nice puzzle! Definetly deserves to be the puzzle of the day.

This puzzle gives a nice "ah-ha!" moment if you can solve it. I hit my 5-10 minute mark of staring at the puzzle and switched gears to "find the least possible answer" and voila!
