Pawns are a clue.
I was briefly stumped, until I wondered about the b-pawns. Since every piece is supposed to serve a purpose in problems (at least "professional" or serious ones), I questioned their presence. They didn't limit the bishop at all, so it was just a matter of seconds until I realized the theme of giving away the rook, as otherwise moving the rook away would result in stalemate. Then it clicked from there. Beautiful problem! I hope I'm able to create something so elegant in my lifetime.

Easy but brilliant all the same.

The Bish found the best solving idea. I was just trying to lift the stalemate, and tried 1.Nh8, but White can't let the g-pawn move. 1.Bg8+ didn't work, so that left--AHHH!

Deja vu
I forgot to add that I'm pretty sure I had seen this problem before... but only after I had solved it again! I guess that's what I meant by "clicked" -- as in, this seems familiar.

Sublime
I thought I had considered that rook sacrifice well enough. how would I be in a better position with it gone? then moved on to other moves. a clever, rewarding puzzle. thank you
