we could make an infinite chain of Qg1+ ~xg1 Nf2#/Qb1+ ~xb1 Nc2#/Qb8+ ~xb8 Nc7#/Qg8+ ~xg8 Nf7# type of mates

This particular form of smothered mate even has a name, Philidor's Mate.

Philidor's Mate rarely shows up in games against two masters because anybody that skilled knows to recognize it and protect against it.

It shows up occasionally in games for lower ranked players, but only if the players can see how to bring it about.

I actually got to use Philidor's Mate once in game here on gameknot. ( gameknot.com )
