As I recall the story, this 9-move version was Bayer's original. However, it was later found to be unsound since Black has a defense after the key move. Hence, it's generally seen today in the 8-move form, which seems to be OK.

Incidentally, Bx6+ as the first move leads to an exciting mate in 14 - not so showy as that in the puzzle, but what I would play OTB

Black escape
A great mate after blacks queen accepts the rook sac'. If black plays g6xh5 instead then the 9 move mate is off. Shame cos its superb otherwise.
