d4...

Message:
I almost always play 1. ... Nf6 in answer to the Queens pawn opening... It really doesn't give away which defence you might choose (as it fits into many defensive lines)... And it more or less secures the e4 square...

The best reply to 1.d4 is that is more comfortable to you.

Message:
As a dutchman and because it gives very interesting positions ( compared with the dull Grunfeld), I conclude that the best reply is 1...f5, followed by the Leningrad system.

Vulture

Message:
I am using with some success the Vulture,
which forms a system from the moves
1.d4 c5 2.d5 Nf6 3.c4 Ne4
It is quite agressive and gives white quite
some trouble in the early opening stage.
It also has a big surprise value.
Yours,
Bernhard

and you can go further into French, Nimzo-Indian or Queens-Indian (recommended by H.C. Opfermann)

Message:
And of course, 90% of white players will play 2.c4 the queen's gambit. I declined the gambit for a long time and played 2...e6, but I am more comfortable accepting the gambit now with 2..dxc4. The nimzo-indian and queen's indian defenses are quite strong, but require a good deal of skill and experience to play properly. Unless you are a very experienced, high-rated player you will probably have more success with the symmetrical queen's pawn game .

The typical reply

Message:
is dxe5. Other moves are inferior and transpose into drawn schemes: 2.d4 is the center game (I don't know the anglosaxon name); 2.e3 is the French exchange (if exd exd); 2.Nf3 is tricky: Black may exchage, for the French setup), or play ...e4; 2.d5 resembles typical Benoni setups; the best reply and the only attempt for White to gain an efge is the simple dx5.
