after the late Henry Bird from England. The Danish Grandmaster Bent Larsen have also played this first move many times.
If you are a really romantic player, you can answer with e5!? called From's Gambit. More normal reply would be d5, c5 or Nf6. Can I suggest you answer with f5!?

Among my friends, that opening is known as "La pajarraca" (Bird=pájaro, in Spanih). One very strong player (Mr. Lazcano) in my city club open with it exclusively. As a curiosity, the only King´s Gambit played by Capablanca, that I know, with white pieces was against Molina, and begun: 1.f4 e5, 2.e4 ...

I used to play it alot in blitz play but found it was rather weak when I used it because of the weak king side. Try playing 1..e5 against it, but be prepared for the KingsGambit...

For god sake, play 1...e5 (against 1.e4 and 1.d4 as well). If you choose to play only one gambit with the Black pieces, it should be 1.f4 e5! It's quite easy to learn the ideas, and you develop many tactical skills playing this gambit.
I admit, it would be hard to play this gambit against high rated players on a site like this, where they can look up lines, but OTB, it's deadly. I've had many quick wins with this gambit. i urge you to give it a try!
I'f you think 1.f4 e5! is to orthodox, then check out 1.f4 g5!?

Is a very sharp gambit, where the white gambits its f pawn (and sometimes alot more then that) to gain advantage. I suggest you try it, it is very exciting especially when you try the Muzio Gambit

I like to play the Froms Gambit against the Bird 1.f4
Because Froms is a very good way for black.Some white players change about this the opening to the kingsgambit and I am shure - all 1.f4 player have to know a lot of kingsgambit too, or they will lost a lot of games.
Against the kingsgambit I like to take the "Falkbeers Gegengambit". Some GMs means this opening let you forget to take the kingsgambit.
A quickly way for the different ways in an opening is here

choose "service" and "Eröffnungsschule" and the german name of the opening - here "Bird-Eröffnung".
It is built with javascript diagramms for userfriendly work so you don't need to understand the german language. Best look and work is with ie 5.5 and later.

I've played Bird's Opening a bit myself. Against a
reply such as ... d5 the idea is usually to play Nf3,
e3, b3, and Bb2 to control the central dark squares,
particularly e5 which can become a powerful outpost
for the white knight. It is similar to the Nimzo-Larsen
Attack, and can also transpose to the Colle-
Zukertort if d4 is played. If black isn't careful, white
can attack quite easily by combining the fianchetto,
knight on e5, and a kingside pawnstorm. The
problem with this is that it voluntarily weakens
white's position, and often black can win by
attacking at the right moment.
