10/09/2002 04:45:24 | I've been there like you.
Message: When I was 12 years old (way back 1972) my first books were:
1. Attack and counter-attack.
2. Modern chess strategy by Pachman.
3. Think like a grandmaster by Kotov
4. Ideas behind chess opening by Fine
You're still young. Opening theories change too fast from time to time, but the ideas remain constant. Learn first the opening ideas before going on the details.
Best of luck. From Bullfighter.

Message: I guess when you know the opening ideas you can work out for yourself the best moves rather than trying to copy something from a book that has worked for somebody else.

10/09/2002 05:18:39 | A book I recommend big time
Message: The road to enlightenment begins with LOGICAL CHESS by Irving Chernev, which is published by Batsford. It dissects games "move by move" and taught me more about opening than just about anything else. It's some kind of wonderful!

Message: you're absolutely right.
first things first. you must start first to understand the concept of the following:
1. blockade.
2. over-protection.
3. hanging pawns.
4. isolated queen's pawn.
5. value of the pieces.
6. king on the center.
7. etc.
once you absorb all of the above, the countless time you'll spend on opening study will be worthwhile.
the last thing is... don't give up! you've all the luxury of time.

It's not a book, but it reads pretty good.

Message: if you click on more options at the left of the screen, you will see a link that takes you to chess books. After clicking on that, you can read other people's comments on various books by clicking on show. I hope this helps...
