Message: The introduction to the puzzle:
"The following chess problem first appeared in the Philippines as a featured
article in a private publication more than 20 years ago. The author, who
prefers to remain anonymous, adopted it from a 19th century chess puzzle
with several modifications. Unlike most puzzles, however, this one has a
story to it. What you are about to read is a product of the author's
playful imagination. Any similarity to a person, living or dead, is purely
coincidental ..."
I think that is one of the most beautiful chess puzzle I have ever seen!

Message: puzzle. But I still was confused by "If white wins he dies...unless". What, is the solution philosphical or am I missing something very obvious?

8/21/2003 14:33:44 [ report this post ] | Well...
Message: One could grab the 3 1/2 inch wooden bishop and drive it deep into the heart of the blood-sucking vampire. That's a killer move right.
Or one could try a mirror mate! Get it MIRROR mate!
There is more than one way to skin a vampire.
Of course you could be chomping on some garlic while playing. No vampire is gonna bite your neck while you have a mouth full of garlic.

Message: Garlic works against most chessplayers OTB, so it's a good advice by tonlesu.
Thx gambitnut ;)

Message: Im going with the garlic and the mirrors. How do we know the vampire is not Jewish?

Message: Very clever indeed, but if they moved 1. Be3+ Kd3
2. Qxd4+ cxd4 3. Rxc3+ Nxc3 4. Rd2#, there is a black rook hanging around on the lower right part of the cross. Still think Dracula would freak out about it?

Message: What's missing? After 2. Qxd4+ black can take only with his rook. Pawn is at c3, so can take pieces in b2 and d2, not d4.
