I don't agree, I probably would have taken with the f pawn as it solidifies the pawn structure, backing up the soon-to-be-clobbered d4. Castle next move and the rook is pointing at the opposing king's castle with no great danger to yours.....I think.

I do agree with your anaysis but 8.a3 was a real waste of a move. Your game is a "Great Comeback".
