He was arrested again.
After a bigger rally of about 3,000 people in Moscow on Saturday, police detained Garry Kasparov, the former world chess champion and another potential presidential candidate.
Mr Kasparov, a leader of the Other Russia opposition coalition, which organised the protest, was later sentenced to five days in jail.

It is the same arrest that I know of. The report only confirms that he was sentenced to five days in jail.
There was another presidential candidate that was arrested too. It was not Garry Kasparov a second time that I know about.
I'm not impressed by Putin. He seems to be slowly trying to reestablish a dictatorship like or at least authoritarian style rule in Russia. His government is trying to crush any political opposition in an almost Stalinist way.
Kasparov got a legal permit for the rally. I don't know what the big deal is about the march; but it sounds like a legal trap that they sprung upon him. I'm glad he only got 5 days. And I hope this unnecessary bullying by the government draws support away from Putin, although I doubt it will. The Russian people need to realize the dangerous position they seem to be allowing Putin to gain. They need to wake up before the clock in Russia is push back 50 years, IMO.

The impression I got was that Kasparov went into the rally expecting to be arrested. It's tough for me to say whether I agree or not... people get arrested when protests threaten to get out of hand in the US too.

If he planned to get arrested all along, then why did he even bother to get any kind of permit?
He probably knew it was a possibility, given the pressure placed upon the opposition. But you don't actually expect to get arrested trying to obey the law.
I'd like more information on what actually happened. We probably won't get it.

planning to get arrested,is advantageous to a cause,as Garys was,i'm sure.He is a world champion chess player,and as so,knows very well how to play a "gambit"It sometimes does rally more support for him and can very well cause not only an uproar of sorts in Russia causing more people to join his cause,but if he had more time behind bars,could very well cause international pressure and poss.embarassment on Putin,if Putin went too far.I'll go as far as saying that Garry was sorry that his penalty was not severe enough!

I admire Garry Kasparov very much. He's putting his reputation on the line and taking on what is probably an impossible task; If he does not challenge Putin, who will?

Seems to me something of a gambit, sacrificing a minor arrest for a better political position in the eyes of the people.
