Subject: Chess programs for Palm PDA?

Message:
I was curious to see if anyone had any experience with the chess programs for a Palm PDA. I have looked at Chess HIRARCS, as well as Chess Tiger and Chess Genius, and they all look good. I am not really looking for strength, but features (ability to annotate, etc.) -- any advice would help -- thanks!

I have ChessTiger v15.1

Message:
I bought this one because it seemed a good balance between strong and cheap (I think it was $15). I've been generally satisfied with it as a sparring partner (i.e., in quick, nonserious games), though its opening book has some holes and there is no possibility of endgame tablebases.

It is not particularly feature-rich. I cannot annotate within the program, but I often save interesting positions that I can later hotsync to my laptop and analyze in greater depth.

When making my choice, I found this page ( www.grailmaster.com ) helpful, though it may be well out of date by now.

I used to use the program till a year ago. And if you want to have chess DB on palm, it is pretty useful. It supports pgn files and have a desktop sync program and you can add annotation with alternate moves. You can have multiple DBs (or directories) of games. Hundreds of them.

My primary use for this was to put in the postion of the paper book and follow it as my brain could not see all the in-between moves on the pages. As you can save it to the DB, you need to put in only once.

It does not have a strong chess engine, and no more updates for a while. But, I don't know if there are other programs these days with DB function and nice interfaces as this one. I tried the Chess Tiger trial, and dissappointed with the interface and no support of DB. However, it was two year ago, so I guess they might have polished it much more.

You can download the trial versions and get the feel of interfaces yourself. For example, I used only the B/W board with newpaper pieces in my color hi-res palm so the stained wood board with fancy pieces were not important for me.
