Subject: PDA

Message:
Has anyone experience with playing on gameknot with a PDA? I have tried, but I only see a quarter of the chess board, which makes it a bit akward. Is anyone aware of a tool which I can use to have the whole screen on the display?

Thanks in advance,

Blanka

I have had...

Message:
the same experience as you, but was using a poor browser. I think a better browser might work - but you will not see the entire screen at once on such a small screen and will need to scroll in both directions a lot.

I would also be interested to know if anyone has had any luck.

A PDA is a personal digital assistant, eg. a Palm Pilot, etc.

How can I play on a PDA?

Message:
Is there any software I can install so that I can download my games to the PDA, make moves during the day and then upload in the evening.

An interesting post that I missed the first time around. I avoided these forums for a few weeks because of these moaners. It seems like they're back.

Message:
well indeed surprised to see this thread back again! Paulg: itis not possible to download the games. That is also normally not available.

What I think is necessary is one of two thinks:
1) A browser who can zoom-out. I've not seen it.
2) Gameknot supports a special PDA format.

So are we talking about a PDA with a direct Internet connection rather that one that is synchronised with a PC, in the same way as I can download news items and then read them throughout the day? I'm not likely to be getting a PDA with Internet for some time, but I would find it useful to be able to make moves during the day and then upload them in the evening.

Hello, paulg!
i'm banned from the forums right now for calling some one else a fool, but i might have a solution to your palm problem:
i can imagine a lupo to your problem, by accessing GK and download the game in PGA format. as far as i know (for example) chesstiger is able to import PGA in the full version. so you can basically export from GK and then import onto your palm, might sound a bit inconvinient, but would be a solution
best regards

I've never actually downloaded a PGN of a current game. How would it affect this, fairly meaningless, thinking time statistic?

I have had good experience ...

Message:
... with using a PDA to manage and keep a record of current, or past games (I even kept on it all my OTB chess games I have ever played!). You will find a variety of chess software for Palm, e.g. on www.download.com, when searching for "Chess" in "Palm OS".

The software I have loved to use is "Pocket Chess Deluxe", which consists of the software you install on your PDA, and a "Chess Companion" tool for the PC. The price is about 20 US$. It has a variety of great features, e.g. you see the whole board neatly displayed, can add hundreds of games to your PDA (e.g. your own, master's games, opening lines you collect, basically all you can get as PGN anywhere), analyse different variations by entering them on the board, etc. It can be kind of your handy electronic chessbook! And here are my tips how to use it:

- Install the tool on the PDA.
- Install the tool on the PC.
- Download e.g. your current games from GK as PGN.
- Combine them into one PGN file, using a normal text editor.
- Open this file in the "Chess Companion" tool on the PC.
- Use the function "Convert to Pocket Chess database".
- This Palm-formatted database can then be synchronised to your PDA in the usual way (needs to be done only once in a while, or whenever you want to add a new downloaded game).
- Now you can go through your current games and check out different lines by entering them with your touch pencil.
- The only drawback is that everything you enter on the PDA is not synchronised back into the database, so you cannot get it back to your PC. You can export games back to text (= PGN) again, but this is tedious, since you have to do it one by one. I even entered new current GK games on the PDA itself instead of synchronising, since this took much less time than doing the above procedure.
- Be aware that there is no "upload" to GK - you just keep your current games and analyses handy, so you enter the decided move manually on GK as usual.
- Just to avoid any misunderstandings: it is true that this tool includes an engine. As a matter of fact, I never used it, since: a) this is a matter of Gameknot rules and etiquette not to do this; b) I have tried the engine on past games, and it proved to be rather weak; c) it is very slow and would make your battery go down very fast.

I can really say, this is really the Internet age way of "extending" your own memory and keeping positions handy, without printing off current games on paper, or analysing with GK analysis feature only, or setting up conventional chess boards over and over again. And you have the unbeatable advantage of having a look at your games and think about your next move wherever you are, e.g. on your way to work, in the pub, or even in the lavatory ... I just regret to say that this is a thing of the past for myself, since I dropped my PDA on a tiled floor (ouch!!!) - and it now rests in peace on the big PDA graveyard, with a cracked display! (:-((

New mobile phones

Message:
Does anyone have any info about chess programs that are written for the new generation mobile phones...Sony Ericsson T610, Nokia 6600 etc? These phones use Java (J2ME). I am interested in a PGN reader type application. I want to be able to download and view games that I play here on Gameknot in much the same way you would on a PDA as discussed above. The program would just be a viewer with no chess playing engine. There is a PDA application described on the link below which is a good example of the functionality I am looking for but on mobile rather than PDA.
