Subject: Postponing Games

Message:
I plan on postponing games while I am on vacation next week. I understand that if I make a move during that time, my opponents will have the option to cancel the postponement. I would like to visit the site at least once or twice during my vacation (assuming that I can get some kind of internet access) to verify that the postponement is still in effect. I am worried (based on what someone said to me) that just visiting the site will trigger the option for my opponents to cancel the timeout. Can somebody straighten me out on how it works.

The GK FAQ Says:

Message:
Q15: My opponent postponed a game, what can I do about it?

A: If your opponent **continues to make moves** in any of his/her games, you will be able to cancel the postponement and restore the original time control of this game. A link will appear on the game page that would let you do so after your opponent makes at least 5 moves (in any of the games).

So merely visiting GK should not cause a problem.

FYI, I have postponed a few times for vacations, etc. Each time I posted a postponement note saying "I will move if I have a chance. Pls don't cancel the postponement if I do so." I think most opponents were glad for me to move once or twice during the postponement rather than not moving at all the entire time. But, then again, they *could* have canceled the postponement had they chosen to do so.

Have fun on yr vacation.

I've been involved in this situation before ... an opponet postpones his/her games, then a few days later makes a move. The flag comes up on my gamepage ...
* cancel the postponement*
... in other words ... I have the option to cancel HIS/HER postponement if I wish. As a matter of courtesy I always ASK via game comments ... "Is it OK if I cancel the postponement?" and honor his/her request.
You take a chance when you make a move during your own postponement ... not everyone will respect your request to keep the postponement intact AND I believe if you make ONE move in ONE game ALL of your games are subject to having your postponement canceled.
Hope that helps,

victord

As this site grows

Message:
And so do the players, I would like to see the abiity to cancel a postponement go away. While on vacation, I do not want to be forced to play within the time limits, but would like to be able to make a move or two when possible. As it is now, I cannot do it. I will be away for a week next week, have Internet access, and will not make any moves on any games. What is the advantage to this?

the ability to cancel…

Message:
a postponement is a necessary safeguard against those who would otherwise abuse the
privilege. coyotefan, you want to have your cake and eat it, too?

I understand why the ability is there

Message:
But there are very few who abuse it, and as a whole, I think it would be an advantage to the site to allow players to make some moves. It still goes against their alloted time out balance. A few moves are better than none.

To me this is like the draw discussion. One or two abuse the system, so there should be a rule that hurts everyone.

I agree…

Message:
that your proposal sounds reasonable assuming that everyone plays by the rules. I have,
however, seen a lot of discussions in these forums about players who procrastinate in
hopelessy lost positions and postpone games when they are one forced move away from
being checkmated. I believe that, with the ability to selectively postpone games, you
would have many more people taking advantage of that privilege to postpone the
unpleasant final stages of losing games while continuing their other games, or, worse still,
beginning new ones. Unfortunately, it's just human nature.

I agree....but

I hate having rules for the few that hurts the vast majority.

Game completion order

Message:
makes a difference in a person's rating. The truth is that a player should want to get their loses rated as soon as possible so that they will win more points for their later wins, assuming their goal is to increase their rating ;-) I guess you should thank the feet draggers for giving you extra rating points.
