Subject: new feature?

Message:
I was thinking it would be kinda cool to have a digital clock next to your player ID on the game
page so that you could see what time it was in your opponent's time zone. It would be interesting
to see how late people stay up to play (I am a night owl). You could even try to take advantage of
opponents who were probably in need of sleep—catch them with a combination when their wits
are a little dull. I know its a silly idea, but could be fun and most people enter their time zone in
their profile so the data is already there.

No good

Message:
It wonīt work, because people can always fool around with their timezone (I have seen excamples of that) . Not to mention that many players not even give their timezone or their country for that matter. But anyway, itīs a funny idea :-).

if we didnt have ideas because of the fact that dishonest people found ways around them, then we wouldnt have a gameknot. i hate it when the reason someone doesnt want an idea is because some dishonest person will find a way around it. their are people who find ways around paying for merchandise at walmart but they still charge us for it. we should consider if yhe idea is practical and could be of use. this is what should determine if we ask for it or not. the fact that some will always find a way around everything should have no influence

How does one "fool around" with

Message:
their timezones on a web server? The
server takes the time when a move is recorded
and automatically gives you and your opponent
the reflection time as per the match you are
playing. How can someone "fool around" with
that? Makes no difference what timezone you give
because the reflection time is still the same.
I do not understand how it is done.

It is a simple clock!

Message:
And it is easy to implement, I guess, since every country has different IP addresses....and that alone cannot be cheated.

And yes...this idea is interesting!

interesting

Message:
I support the idea of maykx. clock must be set as per ip address. If a player from germany plays from some other country, while in tour will have a wrong clock if timezone info is used. Of course not all have correctly given time zone info.

What I meant

Message:
was that if it should be the time zone that determine what the clock shows, then you can fool around with it, by setting different time zones. But if it is done by IP address the way mayks says then it would be a different matter. And as I said I think itīs a interesting idea. But only if it always shows the correct time, otherwise it would just be confusing.

And stinky: On principle I agree with you. My only consern here is that it also works the right way.

anonymizers...

Message:
Use of anonymizer services will show the ip of the anonymizer and not the user, therefore an incorrect time zone. There is no perfect, infallible method. Use of ip is the best, but understand that it will probably not be 100%.

forum link to stay until log out

Message:
The forum link appears on lhs after you have navigated to the forum.
But if you read a post and go to the poster's profile when you try to click on the lhs forum link to return to the forum it has disappeared.
I would like to see the forum link stay until log out

Honolulu & Alice02

Message:
. honolulu I suppose that you could approach that idea now, as said, assuming they listed their Country/Time Zone or such ... but putting the info of Plus or Minus so many hours from your time to theirs into your first Game Note, which can be put upon your Game Que then. I'm sure you know that, but for others newer, I mention it. I do like your idea as much tidier and convenient tho. (Especially when it is you or I being the groggy one trying to figure who Else is groggy !! :)
PS/ {Thanks for designing those Chess pieces! I use your set all the time on GK. :}
***
alice02 I agree with you 1000% about your Forum link/ Profiles idea !!
It would make it much nicer. Usually now I must use my browser "PageBack" to get back from posters' Profile to Forum Thread (And I seem constantly doing Profile cks too. Like to know who is talking.) But That is really inconvenient once multi-pages get involved, such as you go to the Profile then check their Active Games, Past Games etc or want to send them a PM.
Part of the reason for not having it was given to me by Mike. I dont recall his exact words, but was close to : 'the Forums are not as tightly attached to the main site as some other functions are' . (And I think that the GK/BrainBlitz part of GK is the same way. ) Exactly what he means by that, I dont know. But think it may actually be that he has a seperate server aor IP codes maybe.
###
What I had actually asked him about was not the Profiles ,but why the persons little box showing Rating & W/L/D etc could not be put so that it would show up when you put your cursor on their Nik, of their Post ... such as happens on the
My Games page and many others, I just recall. So maybe it does not hinder your idea ... especially since the Lefthand Menu IS part of the MainSite, I BELIEVE (I say, tho truly unSure of anything on GK, except that Mike has a lot of nice ideas that integrate his Chess plus Programming knowledge in neat and interesting ways.
}8-)
Having the Forum STAY up on the MENU once accessed at all, no matter Where we went in that session would be SO convenient. A possible problem !?... I & some Never Log Out. Would Mine stay up always then? (Great! but don't know as The Boss here would go for it?! :) Also, a way the "not as tightly" could affect this idea is: I think that when you are in Forums or Blitz for so long a time, that the main GK site (EG Buddy list) thinks
you are gone offline. Not Certain of that. But have that impression. Dont know if that happens to Profiles' "LAst time online' info either? Wonder if that might effect ability to keep FORUM bar there well enough, in some way?!
Something else I would like a lot is some indicator by everyplayers name (the way the little Pawns are attached now) that would show us if they have no Profile Info entered at all ... then we don't waste time looking them up. Maybe just one little ANSI or Keyboard Character would do nicely.
Regards, Craig

Online Player list

Message:
I often challange players from the 'Players currently online' list. This will help me to pick an opponent who is also playing at the same time and likely to have more than one move per day.
If you navigate thru the 'online player list' can see the some players are duplicated in the page 2 or 3 because this list is being updated on every page request. Moreover, I like to pick an online player in some rating range. but this list is not arranged in any order.
So I suggest a new feature which displays "Players currently online list" sorted(ascending or discending) by rating.
