Subject: blitz

Message:
just spent an hour or so playing blitz. It reminded me of the old GK days. Had some great games with very polite opponents. Interesting that quite a few Blitz players dont play the correspondence type GK games.

In one of my non-blitz GK-games ...

Message:
... I got two additional bishops for two pawns on the opponentīs first rank so that the final position was a mate with FOUR BISHOPS.

One GK-user called this game the "Vatican game", another took this as a proof that I wasnīt playing with computer assistance.
When I understand you correctly, I must have been playing with the assistance of two chess machines ...

The reason for this was simply that my opponent kept on playing although he had only three spaces left for his King (h1, g1, and h2) and no other possible move. At first I wanted to demonstrate him the hopelessness in this poosition, then I hoped that he would continue because the final position looked quite nice and extraordinary.
Maybe your (non-bot) opponent had similar intentions.

If you had bothered to spend a few seconds checking the player list you would have found that teo3d is a member here from Athens, Greece, and then you might not have been in such a hurry to come into this forum with such an outlandish claim about this chess site. To make such a totally wrong assumption and voice it in public is one of the most dangerous things you can possibly do here.

Can you use machines...

Message:
...when playing blitz? I'm not enquiring as to its legality - obviously it would be cheating - but I wouldn't have thought a 10-minute game would give you the time, particularly if it came to a time scramble at the end. Is it physically feasible?
As for whether a human would or would not underpromote, that can be a matter of style or state of mind, assuming there are no 'on the board' reasons to choose other than the Q. Years ago I found myself about to promote a pawn, the promotion of which to a Queen checkmated the enemy King along a diagonal. Well, of course I underpromoted to a Bishop, since it achieved exactly the same thing. Wouldn't you? Would a computer? Who knows?
Incidentally, in my early years, if one had several pawn promotions in prospect, they often ended up as knights. You know: try to win an ending with K+5N vs K. Naturally the defender would take a jaundiced view of this procedure - though it did offer substantial checkmating chances.
Cheers,
Ion

A computer would never underpromote unless it was necessary to win the game.

To use a computer in blitz, I don't think you would be plugging the moves into the computer and waiting for its response. Simply program the machine to work on its own with the site. At least that's what I think would work best.

I'm sure no programming guru, but wouldn't the real trick be how to find the hooks into the GK "blitz" program module in order to achieve what you suggest?
I apologize if my comment is stupid - I seem to be getting quite antiquated on some of these computer issues anymore! ;-)

yeah, the programming would be possible, though it does sound like a lot of work.

Maybe people really do sit there with two chess boards on their screen? But surely ionadowman is right in that it would waste too much time.

I'm honestly not sure -- I don't cheat :)
