Subject: blitz query
Message: In a game against outofthebox (a fine player of blitz), I offered a draw as I could see a continuous checking position. Draw was declined (and rightly so). However a repeated legal move to check was not allowed. Is this correct??? Or is there a slight bug in the system?? Both players came to the conclusion that it was a legal move (in OTB) but must be prohibitted in GK Blitz.
Mateintwo??? Anyone???

Message:
There has been a longstanding beta-bug in the GK Blitz, wherein it will not allow the position to be repeated three times in a row. And the player who encounters the refusal of such third move by the site must select another instead.
This can make for some interesting strategy once one knows of the problem :) Which I have found entertaining.

I do Not know if the refusal would occur if a position was going to repeat a third time, but not in a row?! (Which would also qualify as a 3-Time-Repetition-Draw under standard tournament Chess Rules such as FIDE, ICCF etc.) Nor what would happen if the attempted third move were an absolutely forced one. Perhaps that situation could not really occur since one getting Checked is less likely than the Check-er to be the first to reach a Third position.

PS// Does anyone have additional info, such as the Question about a non-consecutive 3 time rep?

Message: Draw when the same position comes on the board for three times DUring the game. not necessary in a row.
Be carefull that same position means with the same possibilites too!
With this I mean that even the possibility or not to castle or the fact that Knights or rooks of the same colour have switched their position.
if there is a difference beetwen this aspects too, the position is NOT THE same, even if the "picture" of it seems identical.

Message: It just occurred to me that when we say Repeated consecutively or 'in a row', that actually there are two positions being repeated alternately ... so there is really no such thing as in-a-row. Therefore, it seems that GK would probably also deny you the move if it would make a third repetition of any position at any point in the game, regardless of the number of moves that seperated the repetitions. I guess that answers my own Question above. }8-)
I mean on the blitz boards only. The TurnBased correspondence boards will allow a third rep, and ask you if you wish to claim the draw due to it. That is a slight variance from otb tournaments, where no one would be able to point out the draw possibility to any player, as it would be illegal assistance even tho unsolicited. (A likely penalty for such advice if received without asking, would be for the player to be 'warned' and the spectator to be warned or removed from the playing room/site.)

PS// A little addendum occurs to me regarding this rule in tournament situation, as mateintwo mentions ... In that case, most often the Third Repetition is never actually MADE. Because only the player whose turn it is to move can make such claim ... so he is permitted to write the intended move on his scoresheet and then summon a Tournament Director to state that he wishes to claim a DRAW by 3 Time Repetition. And the TD then reviews it using the players Intended move to determine if it will indeed be a third repeat. [But even a TD should not point a third rep out to the players unless one makes a claim for it.]
However if player #one was indeed the first player to make a 3 time repetition and did not claim that draw on his turn, then I believe player #2 could still claim based on the standing position, or if possible to make his own move which would make another 3rd rep position he could claim from that position IF he does not punch his clock before summoning a TD to do so. Unless they have changed it since I last TD's in the 90's :)

Message: I won a game once where my only chance was a draw by the 3 repeat rule. However, my
opponent's king could only move to one other square, so guess what happened on the third
repitition? Yes, I won by checkmate! lol
