Subject: How do i withdraw from a mini-tournament?
Message: i signed up for one to see what it was like, and its been a month and its still nowhere near done. i no longer have time so i want to withdraw, but i cant find that option anywhere.
There have been times ive finished my all games and had none active, then the mini-tournament gives me new matchups automatically. My problem is i want to leave gameknot for a couple months because i just moved and my internet is unstable, i only really have access to internet cafes right now and those cost money...
But gameknot wont let me cancel or withdraw from these games it automatically signs me up for, and because i dont have time in my life anymore a couple games timed out which i didnt even make a single move in. I normally wouldnt care because i dont mind losing tournament points, and my regular rating is normally protected from timeouts as long as i havnt made any moves yet, but 2 games just timed out on me and my rating went down like 30 points between the two games.
Help please? I don't want my rating to keep going down just because gameknot forces me to accept games while im not here, and then times those games out before i can get back to check...

As I understand, the mini-tournament hasnīt started yet, so a "withdraw by admin" wouldnīt cause any trouble. I made a good experience in a similar case, the most important things are to do it in time and to have good reasons.
Good luck, I hope you can return to GK soon.

Message: the tournament started a month ago. i couldnt plan for this prolonged absence that far ahead of time. like i say though i dont mind losing the tournament, but losing my regular rating even if a game in which i didnt even move times out seems more than a little unfair...

12/14/2006 10:49:04 [ report this post ] | no withdraw option from a mini-tournament
Message: Short of intervention by a system admin as suggested above, there is NO WAY to withdraw from a mini-tournament. Your rating will not be effected by games assigned to you if you do not move in those game. As for those in progress where you have made more than 3 moves, sorry, but there is no withdrawal allowed.

Message: xandros, regardless of how many points you might lose by being unable to honour the committment you made in joining the tournament, nevertheless you will very quickly find your level of rating again when you come back to GK. It will depend upon only two things; your chess skill, and the dedicated application thereof. Good luck.

Message: 5 minutes per move. aim to win half your games to maintain rating. you only have to play 4 moves every 3 days standard time control, 4 simultaneous at any one moment. total effort per day= 5 minutes/move * 4 moves every 3 days = 20/3 ~ 7 minutes a day.
true the duration is a factor, but its okay to drop some games if you don't have the time.
strategy: postpone a few days once every other move, so you're only moving at most twice a week in a game. remember sundays you get an extra day.
if you simply don't want to play, make your decision now before you've started. that way things are fair for the other players when you drop out and let the rest of the games go to waste.
take note that i was in the same situation. i will be finishing my master's research this monday. meanwhile i am a couple points away from my first mini-tourney win. using the above strategy helped a lot. i did not feel like playing and it was a major distraction. but i got through it.
4 games is *not* that much to have to deal with.

Message: I am afraid that your second statement ("Your rating will not be affected by games assigned to you if you do not move in those games.") is not true. I copy the Q2 in the FAQs:
"A: If a rated game ends with less than 3 moves, it will not be counted as a win. The reason is, it's hardly possible to show that someone was winning after only two moves. All lost games are always counted as losses for the timed out player regardless of how many moves were made, unless the game was unrated. Also, please note: in chess, moves are counted in pairs -- i.e. 3 moves means both players made 3 moves each. More about the rating system." (link)
Just have a look at xandrosī last two games (0 moves playing White and 1 (white) move playing Black), he lost rating points according to this rule. On the other hand his opponents didnīt get any points.
