Subject: looking for challenges
Message: I know this is rare, but I was wondering if there was anyone out there who would be willing to challenge me to a rated game who is over 2000. I'm a 1400+ player who likes the challenge and is not a fan of unrated games for the most part--unless I am teaching a friend. I want to see how I can do against someone who is over 2000 in a rated game. I prefer longer games as well, but this is not a pre-requisite. So if you are a slower player and over 2000, please let me know. Currently, I don't have any games open, but I will make room as soon as I can to play you. Thanks. I hope you all have a great day.

Message: I doubt that you will receive any rated challenges from any 2000+ established players, maybe a provisional player, but good luck!I think the reason is two fold...
Alot of effort for absolutely no point gain for the 2000+ player,or in the rare chance of a draw ....a severe point loss for the 2000+player.There is also an outside possibility that any player,(not necessarily you)could possibly use a program, just one time against the 2000+player just to get a barrel load of points.
I myself am over 2100 on this site and have been asked the same request....i won't even play an unrated game, let alone a rated one with anyone under 1900.Again...good luck!

Message: Loved your profile page. I just wanted to say that. I understand there is a huge risk--and rarely any gain. Maybe it would be more reasonable to ask for unrated games from 2000+ opponents. I would never cheat to win....I'd rather have my rank drop than cheat....that's just stupid and it's not real....my rank I've earned--no matter how low or high it is. But I understand you weren't referring to me. Anyway, is there anyone out there over 2000 who would want to play me?

Message: Sometimes I will play an unrated game with a low rated player, but I simply won't accept a rated challenge. I am playing a lower ranked player now, and it looks like it is going to be a draw!
Nathan, I don't think you quite understand the risk involved for the higher ranked player. I don't think the 2000+ player has to worry about losing; that is not the real risk. The risk involved is getting into a drawn position. That is a very real possibility. It is hard to control and play against. The higher ranked player stands to lose big time, even with just a draw.
Playing for a draw is a common strategy that I use against slightly higher ranked players. Sometimes I can sense how they squirm trying to avoid the draw that I know they see. Sometimes they make a mistake trying to avoid the draw and then I win. Currently, I see slightly lower rated player use the same strategy against me! If it is a draw and cannot be avoided without hurting my position, I will accept it. But that is not much of any option when playing someone 500 points below my own. Such a game is simply not worth the risk. I'd rather play somebody under 1200, where my opponent would really have absolutely NO chance to even draw...but then there is no challenge, unless I am teaching.
It would be different if the time controls were set to OTB standards. But here, players can use books and databases; so I would not necessarily be playing a 1400 or 1500 player...rather the Grandmaster that they are copying. That means I might only be playing the 1500 player for a couple of moves during the middle-game (in reality).
Also, many 1500 players can play extremely well for large number of moves. At times, they can play 500 points above their normal strength. Their problem is that they are usually inconsistent. Once you understand this, the risk becomes obvious. I wouldn't want to be caught playing one while they are on a winning streak.

Message: Good luck nathanman22.
When I have a slot open, I'll play you an unrated game. I promise that I won't hold anything back while playing.
I still don't understand why you want a rated game as opposed to an unrated one. You lose and you lose rating points, although perhaps very few because of the huge difference.
I know Cyrano used to play some very low rated players when challenged. I heard that some low rated players could actually gain rating points by playing him even if they lost. Now I see him playing significantly lower rated player only through unrated games.
Many stopped playing these kinds of lop sided rated games because some people used these games to manipulate their ratings. I heard that GK got wise to this activity and started to consider this kind of manipulation as a form of cheating. The key to staying out of trouble while playing such games is to play fairly and to the best of your ability...and complete the game no mater what, until the result is obvious. In the past, the higher rated player would sometimes drop a piece and lose the game to his much lower rated opponent on purpose. That way he could play against weaker players during team games, because of his now lower rating. This would significantly load the odds in favor of his team. Of course, this is unfair; but people did do it deliberately. Now GK has safe guards in place to prevent much of this kind of activity.
