Subject: online chess addiction
Message: are others besides me feeling like they're addicted to gameknot? I've never felt like I've had an internet addiction before but I cannot stop playing. I don't want to give up playing but I have to learn somehow to play in a way that doesn't get in the way of time I should be working or spending time with my family and other live humans! Any suggestions, comments, thoughts?

11/20/2007 13:07:18 [ report abuse ] | Limit the number of games you play
Message: ...at any one time (I used to limit the number of games I played to 12). Focus on your move in a particular game and write down likely responses it, then work out your future response to your opponent's rebuttal. Don't place that move into the system. Just have it ready so you don't waste time when your opponent does make his move.
What that allows you to do is to spend time with family or work, yet control the amount of lengthy time spans you spend at the computer (at least you can control when you need to make those lengthy time spans thinking about your next move). Many times you will only have to briefly check whether your opponent has made a move and then quickly respond.
Basically, you need to learn better time management.

Message: That is indeed a funny picture...
I spend too much time on GK probably, but then I don't go out one night per week to a chess club. This is how I justify the time spent online...

Message: I think there is a serious side to this, you can become obsessed with any activity.
I have had to reduce my time spent on GK, its not healthy sitting in front of a computer screen and it certainly doesn't help your social life.
One little tip, make a print out of your games..or some of them. You can then take a look at those during a lunch break or when travelling etc, times when you would probably have been doing nothing anyway.
Its better than disappearing to play on the computer when your wife and family are around..even chess is not worth an expensive divorce ! ;)

11/28/2007 17:52:23 [ report abuse ] | Play blitz....
Message: till you drop over!I find that even though this is not the best blitz site like ICC or others, playing alot of quick 10 minute games,say,20-30,or more in a night gets my "addiction"in the long game to a minimum and I play less long games. On a site called Instantchess(a blitz site),they have games that can be played from 1 minute to say,5 minute time limits, instead of 10 minutes, like GK.Exhaustion can come quickly and you will get sick of playing for a while, just like eating too much at a smorgasboard.

Message: Use the 'wait your turn feature'. It's a lot better than using the refresh button and you can keep busy on-line else where. That allows to do other things besides playing games...like earning money.

Message: lighttotheright ...
When you're a Gameknot addict, you do not use the 'wait your turn feature' cos nobody else is moving and you cannot wait to move ... hence, the anxiety of being in addiction causes one to keep on depressing the refresh button ....
Get my point?

12/04/2007 01:11:56 [ report abuse ] | Download games?
Message: With regards to leo_london's remark of printing the games, is there any way to download your active games onto a palmtop or so? It'd be a great way to make my train-commute more interesting and then when I get home I just need to synchronize (upload my moves) and I can spend the evening with my family without worrying about my games, time outs, etc.
I recognize the refresh-refresh-refresh-why-doesn't-anybody-move feeling. There's also a refresh-before-taking-my-coat-off. Horrible.

12/07/2007 09:22:30 [ report abuse ] | chess addiction and GK
Message: I'm a bourbon drinker and GameKnot is my martini. That is, it is neither the heart of my addiction, nor the finest available, but it is an integral component of my steady diet of chess, much of it online.
We should start a twelve step group.

Message: @radboud
You can download .pgn files with your active games (you have that option in upper right corner when you go to your "games in progress" page). I don't know what operating system your PDA uses, but there has to be some program that you might use on it to open those game files. After all, .pgn is short for portable game notation. I googled and found this program for pocket PC www.chessgenius.com , but there are many others as well.
And yes, I want to be addict to! I only wait to get premium membership (hope it will be in a few hours) and then the party begins!
