Subject: Bank tranfers
Message: Why in the world would anyone have to vote to delete. It was a great question. The few rule as always.

Message: Strictly speaking, it seems that the majority ruled since more people voted to delete it than to keep it. The majority, given that the majority of people didn't care one way or another to vote, is still probably unperturbed by the turn of events.
I believe that anyone who voted to delete the thread likely did it out of consideration of not having any transfer information out in the public eye. I checked the thread earlier today, and it seems that his question was answered by Mike. So it's probably a moot point, anyway.
Personally, I don't think this board benefits much with reactionary "Why was this thread deleted?" posts. Sometimes you gotta respect the voters and let it go. So I did vote for this thread to be deleted. I did want to give you the courtesy of explaining my vote, though.

Message: That if a thread contains a question that Mike felt he needed to answer, then it would make sense for that thread to never be deleted so that we can all see the response.

Message: ... on that bob2.
I had my only string ever made here deleted, and it's beyond me why people want to delete ideas, thoughts and questions that are posted for others to read.
I simply don't get it, I would think there is enough space to keep the thread and just let it gather dust if nobody reads it anymore.
Cheers to Gameknot, anyway - it's a great site and I much appreciate the string on addiction in this forum. (please don't delete that!)

Message: We don't know why people wanted to delete the thread. As chessnovice suggested, perhaps it was because they were worried that bank details had accidentally been disclosed and wished to prevent that sensitive information getting into the wrong hands.
If so that is quite a benign reason.

Message: tim_b, if that is the case! I just don't think that of my fellow gamers here. Who would want to post their bank account numbers on the net for all to see, furthermore: Why, for what purpose?

Message: It was getting a bit 'unfriendly', calling each other stupid etc... not that it was too severe, but still, the unfriendly words were there to read. The topic starter got his answer via GameKnot's customer service, there's nothing to worry about. (you just have to mention your user name somewhere in an additional note or memo, which is usually possible).
I can understand why the thread has been removed.

12/08/2007 10:05:19 [ report abuse ] | Those who are complaining...
Message: Those who are complaining of the favor of the few should get off their lazy butts and vote to keep the thread. You have just as much right as others to vote--and you could easily have made the thread stay there--if you had decided to voice your opinion. It's not that your opinion is not heard--but that you didn't voice it. So stop complaining that threads are deleted in the favor of the few when you had just as much right and could have stopped it from being deleted....if you had voted. There was no injustice here--those who populate the forum and thought it was an issue deleted it and those who said nothing are to blame just as much for its deletion.
By the way, I voted to delete it before I understood that it was not really his bank number--I do so out of concern for him and his protection, but I didn't know all the information. I found out only after it was deleted--that it really wasn't his bank number...oops. Anyway, I was trying to protect a fellow GK player from fraud--yet, when I get on this thread--all I see are people bashing those who deleted the thread--even though they could have simply saved it with a single vote. Come on people! You have a say--use it! And don't sit around complaining that the "voice of the few" were recognized when you didn't even vote--that's just stupid!

Message: So I realize that this last message was a little bit harsh. I want you to know first of all that I am not attacking the people who are writing but the idea that is being promoted. This idea that the people who did vote are at fault is not 100% true. Think about it--if all those people who decided not to vote in the last presidential election had voted for Bush's opponent, it could have majorly changed the politics we are facing right now. People who don't vote are just as guilty as those who do for the results that occur--because being silent is like voicing an ok for what is going to happen, if that makes sense. I voted and did my part--but for those who didn't vote--that election was close--it could have been the difference maker. Yet, people stand silently and then willingly complain when something doesn't go the way they want rather than making their voice heard. The same in this forum--1 vote is 1 vote--and we must all make ourselves heard rather than complaining that something doesn't go the way you like after you haven't spoken out about it.

Message: Well done, you've pretty much summed everything up about the voting debate. People are perfectly entitled to vote to get rid of any thread, and you've got no reason whatsoever to slag them off for it.
I was the person responsible for the forum becoming heated. That was my fault, i assumed that the person had posted their own bank information (they should have made it clear it was GK's) and i said in no uncertain terms how unwise that is. You can argue i was too strong-worded, but you cannot argue with my right to help get rid of the thread.

Message: rtr4sm:your remarks were not by far anything big,but my only problem is you went out of your way to vote to delete. If the person was that stupid as to place their bank info like that, why was it your concern. They were smart enough to ask a good question how stupid could they really be.To protect the greater good is getting old tho.The FEW want to tell the many want to do all the time, because for some reason the many just sit by and let it happen.Nathanman so you voted without knowing what was really going on.The earth isn't going to stop because of that mistake here. By the way I did vote to keep it. I'll say again if you read the postings vote one way or the other.10 votes to delete isn't enough,it should be more.I don't know what the number should be tho. If you want to start a post about how great AL GORE would have done as President, now that would be a heated debate.

Message: You are missing my point. I'm simply saying you have a vote and it's a good idea to use it. Yes, I misread--but I don't make that mistake often. Realize that my intentions were good--to help out a fellow gameknot player. I'm just saying that the many can have their voice heard---by being silent, they subjected themselves to the voice of the few (supposedly)...so who's fault is this? If the many had voted it clearly would have outweighed the votes of the few (supposedly) and this problem wouldn't have even occurred. I make my voice heard (clearly...lol). The Al Gore was just an example of how people actually voting can change thing...the majority apparently was charged up against this thread for whatever reason---because it was voted to be deleted. The minority apparently is those who wanted it--or this would never have happened. The majority actually most likely is those who didn't care and didn't vote--and their votes could have gone either way. Whatever the case, the thread is gone because more people wanted it gone than those who didn't....and that's not the fault of those who voted and those who failed to vote either way.
Heinzkat--the way I read it, the top part was part of the gk's information, but the second part was his account number. I separated the two sections and thus, read it differently. I apologize if I misunderstood, but know that my intentions were good and helpful. The last thing I try to do is hurt or attack anyone (except over the chess board--hehe)....I do my best to be everyone's friend and i have done a pretty good job here of making my points without attacking others personally. My point is that people who were upset should have voted...for those who did, I guess they should be on others about not voting...not on us because we expressed our opinion (especially since I did so out of good-heartedness).

Message: But in the end it's a GameKnot moderator (Master Mike personally? I have to admit I have no clue how big GK's personnel base is) who decides what stays and what gets deleted. He can base his decision on the amount of +/- votes but in the end he is the one decides. He can delete a thread without any delete votes and can let a thread stay that has a lot of delete votes.
Or not?
Heinzkat...
Oh and nathanman22 (and rt4sm), just a loose comment, no added weight on this, don't take it too seriously, but ... sometimes you must not judge too quickly; bad assumptions lead to bad decisions, just like in Chess :-)

Message: I disagree on 2 points. 1st point why drop it.We are just talking around and no ones feelings need to be hurt. 2nd point is why vote to delete.Again I say the greater good thing is wearing thin.I know what is best for you.I was just doing it to help you.I have always voted for each post that I read.If I don't like it,I still vote to keep. There has to be some kind of control or this would just be a bunch of people swearing at each other.People are getting thinner and thinner skin now a days.In the long run I really don't know any one of you here, and shouldn't care one bit what you think. Its nice to talk and get different ideas from all around.Like I've said before,I have noticed alot of people know what is best for me.If someone is getting out of hand slap the BANNED ON THEM for a little while.Lastly stated a vote to delete is forcing you opinion on other people.

Message: So is a voting for a president, say Bush, forcing your opinion on others as well? Should we do away with the entire political system based on the idea that if anyone votes, they force their opinions on others....
If you want to have thick-skin then you also are willing to stand up for what you believe to be true--and this is done by voicing your opinion. I'm sure you don't just stand around and let others make decisions for you...you stand up and present your viewpoint as well--and that's not forcing your opinion on others, is it? I think that voting in this case or any other case is just a sign of voicing your opinion which you are entitled to--not enforcing your opinion.
Let me ask you--by voting to keep the thread didn't you force your opinion on those who did not want to keep the thread open. How dare you! (: Now doesn't this statement sound somewhat hypocritical when you think about it? I'm not trying to make you mad, but just make you see that it works both ways. Based on your idea that by voting we force our opinions on others (which is straight up not true at all), you are also closing your option of voting the other direction....because heaven forbid, you would impose upon the rights of people like me who voted against it.
I was actually going to stop writing in this thread after my last post--I had said all I needed to, but the ridiculousness of that last accusation had to be answered. I rest my case.

Message: the concept of working both ways would be more reasonable in my opinion if that was how thread deletion voting actually worked, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. For instance, if ten members vote to keep it and twenty vote against it then it is gone and no more voting is available, but if that situation is mirrored, and ten vote to delete while twenty vote to retain the thread, then it stays, but the voting can go on and if enough vote to delete with a margin of ten then it is lost and voting ceases. I cannot see how that is fair or how it cuts both ways. In my view it lends itself to "dog in the manger" scenarios. "If I dont want it nobody should have it"
