Subject: Suggestion: Allow initial position in 'start game'
Message: I asked GK to allow setting an initial position when you start a (single) game, just like you can when starting a mini tournament. It should be easy enough to impliment. It would allow you to try an opening in just one single game, or a few games.
Posting here to get opinions and possibly support towards GK.
???

Radboud.

Message: and it has been suggested before, I'm quite sure of that... I would like to be able to play unrated games with an interesting endgame for example...
The only way you can start a game with a different 'initial position' than the standard one at the moment, is by timing out a game and reinstating it ;-)

Message: I'm not convinced, some people would try starting loads of games with immediate winning positions. And some people who aren't quite on this planet would no doubt join them. And cunning people would inflate their ratings that way.

Message: Instead of a single game, make it to where you must play two games when an initial position other than standard is initiated--one from each side of the board. Then it doesn't matter if there is a forced win. The games can still be rated--manipulation won't work when you have to defend both sides. You may win one game, but lose the next. That should keep people more honest.

Message: Well, I personally trust everyone I play on this site. If someone wanted to play from a certain position with me and I felt the position was equal for me at worst (I wouldn't want to start from a position I didn't like), then I'm sure we could reach the desired position simply by starting a game (rated or unrated) and then playing it out to that position.
I did once see a mini tournament (and even commented on it) that had this starting position (black to move:
How it got anyone to join was completely beyond me. Some poeple are either very dumb, very oblivious, or very funny (at least in their own minds...).

I thought that there was a limit of 6 or 7 moves for an 'initial position'? You could say that positions beyond that number of moves are unrated.

Message: Ha Ha oogiegork, a warning was the least you deserved for your witty tourney. We've all laughed about the two move checkmate before, think of a better and more original joke next time.

Message: The irony about trying to inflate your rating by using the Fool's Mate is that the game isn't rated when it lasts less than three moves.
At least, that's how it used to be. I'm not sure if that changed.

Message: I recently dressed up at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival and played games against passerby for a $2 donation to our state chess association. One mother gave her son $2, and he came up and played the White pieces against me. There followed...
1. h3 e5 2.f3 Qh4+ 3.g3 Qxg3#
I felt sorta bad playing that.

Message: Don't feel guilty. If he was that bad then your 'match' against him will mean he retires for good or learns something about the game, but either way it's better than him playing at that level again. I'm sure it will benefit him in the long run, no pain no gain as the wise saying goes...

Message: KP,
you should be ashamed, playing that mate against a little kid!
not to mention, you are a poor fundraiser, if you could get yourself # in 3 moves, you would have made a lot more money off the little kids by the end of the day lol
